JOB SUMMARY
The claims supervisor is responsible for supervising and coordinating cargo and operational claims activities within the terminal. This role involves investigating cargo loss, theft, shortages, damages, and operational incidents while ensuring proper documentation, timely claims resolution, and compliance with Nigerian maritime regulations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise daily cargo claims and incident management activities.
- Investigate: Cargo damage, cargo shortages, missing containers/cargoes, pilferage and theft, contaminated/wet cargo, and vessel discharge discrepancies.
- Review and verify: Shipping manifests, bills of lading, tally sheets, delivery orders, and cargo inspection reports.
- Prepare claims reports, incident summaries, and supporting documentation.
- Liaise with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigeria Customs Service, shipping companies, freight forwarders, P&I Club, Nigerian Shippers Council, insurance companies, surveyors, and terminal operations teams.
- Ensure claims are processed within approved timelines and contractual obligations.
- Monitor cargo handling procedures to reduce operational losses and damages.
- Recommend corrective and preventive actions after investigations.
- Maintain accurate claims records and database systems.
- Supervise claims officers, clerks, and support staff.
- Participate in dispute resolution and operational review meetings.
- Ensure compliance with Nigerian maritime regulations, port operational standards, terminal safety procedures, insurance, and liability requirements.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Knowledge of port terminal and maritime operations.
- Cargo claims investigation and reporting skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good negotiation and conflict-resolution skills
- Effective communication and report-writing skills
- Knowledge of shipping and customs. documentation.
- Computer proficiency (MS Excel, Word, terminal systems).
