Winchendon Public Schools
The Payroll and Human Resources Generalist plays a key role in supporting employees across the school district by providing accurate payroll services and comprehensive HR support. This position works closely with both the Business Office and the Human Resources Department to ensure staff are supported throughout every stage of their employment, from hiring through retirement.
This is a full-time, year-round position with a standard work schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some flexibility in hours may be required during peak periods. The position reports directly to the School Business Manager.

They are trustworthy with confidential information, communicate clearly and professionally, and are able to handle sensitive situations with discretion and calmness. Strong computer skills are essential, particularly with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
Experience or working knowledge of payroll and HR systems—such as payroll software, time and attendance platforms, and applicant tracking systems—is highly valued. A solid understanding of federal, state, and local payroll and employment regulations is also important.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Support
- Set up and maintain employee records in the district’s payroll system, including job assignments, compensation, and deductions
- Process regular and special payroll runs accurately and on time, including reviewing timesheets and additional pay requests
- Assist with payroll audits, reports, and data verification to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Coordinate retirement enrollment and reporting for eligible employees, including required forms and submissions
- Maintain organized payroll documentation, including timesheets, compensation changes, and authorization memos
- Respond to employee questions and provide support related to payroll and compensation matters
Human Resources Support
- Assist with employee onboarding, including processing new hire paperwork and ensuring all compliance requirements are met
- Create and manage employee accounts within the district’s attendance and absence management system
- Support benefits enrollment for new hires and assist current employees during open enrollment periods
- Calculate payroll adjustments related to leaves, separations, and retirements, including vacation and sick time payouts
- Maintain accurate records for contracts, stipends, and special compensation
- Support the hiring and onboarding of substitutes, student teachers, and other temporary staff
- Act as a point of contact for employees, applicants, and town officials regarding HR-related matters
- Complete additional duties as assigned by district leadership
Compensation
- Starting salary of $60,000 per year
