About the Role
The Large Binocular Telescope Observatory (LBTO) is home to one of the most advanced optical and infrared telescopes in the world. With two massive 8.4-meter mirrors mounted side by side, it allows astronomers to explore everything from nearby exoplanets to the most distant galaxies in the universe.
We’re looking for an Observatory Support Associate (OSA) who will play a critical role in running nightly telescope operations on Mount Graham. In this position, you’ll help ensure smooth observing sessions, maintain safety at the site, and assist scientists from around the world as they collect astronomical data.
This is a hands-on, technical, and safety-focused position ideal for someone who enjoys working with complex systems and doesn’t mind spending nights at high altitude (10,500 feet).
What You’ll Do
- Operate and monitor the Large Binocular Telescope during nightly observing sessions.
- Prepare the telescope at dusk and safely shut it down at dawn.
- Work directly with observers to collect scientific data efficiently and accurately.
- Monitor telescope performance, adaptive optics, and image quality in real time.
- Watch environmental conditions such as wind, humidity, and temperature, making decisions about safe telescope operation.
- Act as the on-site safety officer at night, ensuring the well-being of all personnel and equipment.
- Handle emergencies and provide first aid if needed.
- Log nightly activities, system performance, and weather conditions.
- Report equipment issues and coordinate with technical staff to fix or improve systems.
- Attend observatory meetings and share updates about telescope operations.
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
- At least five years of relevant technical or scientific work experience.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to and from Mount Graham regularly.
- Ability to perform duties at high altitude (10,500 ft).
Preferred Skills & Qualities:
- Strong understanding of telescope systems and astronomical instrumentation.
- Excellent attention to detail and clear communication skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- A collaborative mindset and readiness to work as part of a diverse team.
Why Join LBTO
At the University of Arizona’s LBTO, you’ll be part of a team advancing astronomical discovery through world-class research. You’ll work in a unique and beautiful environment, gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge telescope systems, and contribute directly to the success of international scientific missions.
