    Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about public safety, smart infrastructure, and the future of transportation in Alberta? Join a team where your technical expertise directly improves roadway safety, reduces collisions, and shapes the way traffic systems serve communities across the province. This is your opportunity to collaborate with experienced professionals and contribute to a highway network that supports safe, efficient, and cost-effective travel for all Albertans.

In this impactful role, you’ll provide hands-on technical expertise across Alberta’s traffic operations—including signals, lighting, signage, and speed zones. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you’ll help deliver safer highway designs, audit the performance of key traffic infrastructure, and ensure that departmental standards meet evolving needs. Your work will influence long-term decisions that directly affect public safety and optimize transportation investments.

    Your key responsibilities include:

    • Conducting technical reviews and audits of traffic signals, highway illumination, signage, and pavement markings to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards
    • Collecting and analyzing field data (e.g., speed studies, sightlines, traffic flow) to support decision-making and infrastructure improvements
    • Advising internal and external stakeholders—including engineers, consultants, and agencies—on best practices for traffic operations and system optimization
    • Reviewing and maintaining signal timing plans, cabinet systems, lighting programs, and control devices, including software and hardware updates
    • Preparing and maintaining technical documentation, design specifications, and operational records in the Transportation Information Management System (TIMS)
    • Supporting the development of Ministerial Orders for speed limit amendments, and updating related GIS speed layers
    • Contributing to the development and publication of traffic engineering manuals, guidelines, and standards, including intranet/internet content updates
    • Reconciling invoices and tracking expenditures related to the Tourism Highway Signage Program (THSP)
    • Participating in system testing and improvement discussions for TIMS and other internal traffic management tools

What you’ll bring to the role:

    • Strong collaboration skills to effectively engage with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders on shared safety and infrastructure goals
    • Clear and confident communication to explain technical concepts, advise on operational issues, and support public-facing decisions
    • Critical thinking and judgment to evaluate infrastructure options, assess compliance, and support long-term solutions
    • Attention to detail and commitment to technical accuracy, especially when reviewing plans, designs, and site conditions
    • A problem-solving mindset and adaptability to emerging technologies, systems, and safety frameworks
