    About the Role

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Research Technician to join the Mosquito Symbiosis and Infection (Mossi) Lab within the Vector Biology Department.

Our lab studies the relationships between mosquitoes and the microbes they carry. We use this knowledge to develop innovative strategies for controlling diseases like malaria and viral infections spread by mosquitoes. You’ll be part of a dynamic, supportive, and multi-disciplinary team working on research that combines microbiology, molecular biology, and vector biology to improve global health.

As a Research Technician, you’ll play a vital part in maintaining our mosquito colonies, supporting molecular and microbiological experiments, and helping to keep the lab running smoothly day to day. You’ll also assist with data analysis, reporting, and lab organization.

    Key Responsibilities

    Research Support

    • Help manage and maintain healthy mosquito colonies within the insectary.
    • Provide technical support for microbiology and molecular biology experiments.
    • Carry out cell culture, including both insect and mammalian cells, following sterile techniques.
    • Perform microscopy and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) as part of research projects.
    • Contribute to independent and collaborative research within the lab.

    Data and Reporting

    • Record and manage experimental data using appropriate software tools.
    • Create reports and PowerPoint presentations summarizing research findings for supervisors and funding partners.
    • Assist in data analysis and draft sections of scientific reports and manuscripts.

    Lab Organisation

    • Keep laboratory spaces clean, safe, and well-stocked.
    • Support the preparation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), risk assessments, and permit applications.
    • Communicate and coordinate with external collaborators and research partners.

    • Experience working in a laboratory environment, ideally involving mosquito rearing, microbiology, molecular techniques, or cell culture.
    • Good record-keeping and data management skills.
    • The ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
