The Opportunity
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is looking for experienced meteorologists to join the Meteorological Service of Canada. These positions support weather forecasting operations and research that directly impact Canadians—helping keep communities safe and informed.
This hiring process is not for entry-level candidates. It is specifically for meteorologists with at least 2–3 years of direct forecasting experience. Successful candidates will be placed in a pool and may be considered for current or future openings.
Salary Levels
- MT-02 (Developmental Meteorologist): $73,196 – $93,698
- MT-03 (Operational Meteorologist or R&D Meteorologist): $89,705 – $113,981

What You’ll Do
As a meteorologist at ECCC, you’ll:
- Analyze and interpret weather data.
- Identify and track weather patterns and trends.
- Produce and deliver weather forecasts for clients (public, government, and specialized users).
- Work in fast-paced operational centres that run 24/7.
- (For MT-03 R&D roles) Contribute to scientific development in areas like numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, modeling, and environmental forecasting.
What You Need to Qualify
Education (mandatory):
- A recognized bachelor’s degree in science.
- Coursework must show a strong background in meteorology, physics, and mathematics, including:
- At least 10 university-level courses in physics and math.
- Courses in dynamic meteorology, thermodynamic meteorology, and synoptic meteorology.
- Three additional meteorology-related courses.
- If you studied outside Canada, you’ll need a Canadian equivalency assessment.
Experience (mandatory):
- MT-02: At least 2 years of recent, full-time forecasting experience.
- MT-03: At least 3 years of recent, full-time forecasting experience.
- Experience must include:
- Analyzing weather data
- Diagnosing weather systems and patterns
- Producing and issuing forecasts
Note: Work as an observer, technician, or research-only meteorologist does not count as operational forecasting experience.
Assets (nice-to-have):
- A Master’s degree in meteorology, physics, math, or a related science.
- Training from a recognized meteorologist program (aligned with WMO standards).
- Coursework or experience in areas like: GIS, climatology, oceanography, hydrology, air quality, computer science, statistics, risk analysis, or environmental modeling.
- Experience in:
- Communicating forecasts to the public or media.
- Writing scientific reports or technical documents.
- Programming, data management, or numerical modeling.
- Evaluating forecast performance using statistics.
Language Requirements
- English essential for most locations.
- Some positions require French essential or bilingual proficiency (English/French).
