Clinical Fellow in Head & Neck, Thyroid & Parathyroid Surgery

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint a Clinical Fellow for a 12-month post in Head & Neck Surgery, starting August 2026. The role is based at Aintree Hospital, the main referral centre for head and neck cancer across Liverpool, Merseyside and Cheshire.

This fellowship is particularly suited to surgeons who are nearing completion of higher surgical training or who already hold their CCT, ideally with the FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent. The post is designed to bridge the transition into independent consultant practice, offering a balance of supervision and autonomy that increases over the year.

    What the role involves

    • Surgery & Clinical Care:
You’ll gain hands-on experience across the full spectrum of modern head and neck cancer surgery, including both transoral and open approaches, as well as the management of benign and malignant thyroid and parathyroid disease.
    • Multidisciplinary Teamwork:
The postholder will take an active role in preparing and presenting patients at MDT meetings, and in leading the clinical team for ward management, teaching and referral queries.
    • On-Call Commitments:
Participation in a 1:9 rota covering both night shifts and daytime “hot-reg” duties.
    • Research & Academic Activity:
Fellows will contribute to data collection, database management and publications, with opportunities to collaborate on projects in areas such as immunotherapy, HPV-related cancers, oral oncology, and survivorship research.

    What you’ll gain

    • A high-volume surgical experience in a nationally recognised unit.
    • A structured year with progressive responsibility, tailored to your development.
    • Skills in both clinical leadership and teaching, preparing you for a consultant post.
    • Opportunities to contribute to leading national and international research, with a strong track record of clinical trial participation and academic publication.

    The Trust

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust brings together Aintree, Broadgreen, and the Royal Liverpool Hospitals, along with Liverpool Women’s as part of the wider group. Together, they serve over 630,000 local residents and provide specialist care for more than two million people across the North West.

Aintree Hospital is also the designated major trauma centre for Merseyside and Cheshire, hosting a number of regional services alongside head and neck oncology.

✅ Essential requirement: Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
📞 For informal discussions, contact Mr Jason Fleming, Fellowship Director, at 0151 529 5259.
