Full time role. Based in office in Lagos
The Country Director – Nigeria has overall responsibility for the strategic leadership and direction of the World Literacy Foundation (WLF) and Sun Books in Nigeria to achieve the organizations’ vision, mission, and objectives.
This role leads the in-country team of 4 staff members and a large volunteer base and is responsible for all programmatic and operational aspects of the initiatives.
The Country Director represents WLF and Sun Books with key Nigerian stakeholders, including major funders, government agencies, community groups, industry bodies, and international literacy and education organizations.
The role is central to the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of country program goals, objectives, and performance targets, ensuring efficiency, innovation, and impact.
A champion of WLF and Sun Books’ core values, the Country Director embraces the use of technology to improve literacy outcomes in the communities with the greatest need.
This position is based in Lagos and reports directly to the Africa Director.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Program Development, Implementation, and Management
- Provide leadership for the development, management, and implementation of all program activities in line with the overall WLF/Sun Books strategic plan and the local country context.
- Serve as the primary face and voice of the organization to stakeholders, media, conferences, funders, and the wider community.
- Lead and supervise the team, providing the necessary support to ensure programmatic and fundraising/marketing activities are delivered to a high standard.
- Grow into a visible public profile and become a leading advocate in Nigeria for the issue of illiteracy.
- Act as a 21st-century leader in digital communication, utilizing tools such as public speaking, social media, podcasts, webinars, and mainstream media to promote the mission.
- Develop and maintain consistent, clear, and timely communication between the country office and global colleagues.
- Oversee reporting on country-specific activities including those of any implementing partners to internal and external stakeholders.
- Conduct strategic and operational planning to develop action plans that address organizational priorities.
Office Management
- Provide oversight of financial, HR, and administrative functions in the country office, ensuring full compliance with internal policies and donor requirements.
- Ensure all legal obligations are met, including organization registration in Nigeria, employment law compliance, insurance, contracts, and other regulatory requirements.
People Operations Management and Organizational Development
- Deliver dynamic, innovative leadership that creates a work environment fostering high-performing, mission-aligned teams.
- Oversee timely recruitment and onboarding of staff.
- Conduct regular staff performance appraisals to ensure high-quality performance, identify development needs, and ensure appropriate support and training are provided.
- Hold regular All-Staff meetings to review and assess organizational progress.
- Promote behaviors and working styles aligned with the core values, mission, and vision of WLF/Sun Books.
Representation and External Relations
- Develop and manage relationships with stakeholders, partners, funders, peer organizations, government agencies, educational authorities, and institutions.
- Represent WLF/Sun Books within Nigeria’s education and development community by attending events, conferences, and relevant forums to enhance the organization’s profile.
- Work closely with the Marketing/Fundraising team to grow donor support within Nigeria and assist in hosting donor visits to project sites.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Master’s degree in Marketing, Business, Management, or a related field.
- A minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience (preferably in the NGO sector).
- A management style that is results-oriented and flexible, while empowering staff with autonomy and clear direction.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire trust, motivate teams, and collaborate effectively.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders, including funders and government bodies.
- Demonstrated planning, supervision, and program development skills.
- Proven track record in building and leading high-performing teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Demonstrated history of achieving tangible results.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and take initiative in dynamic environments.
