Our horticulture programme is one of our most vibrant areas of work. At our beautiful Tooting garden site, we combine hands-on horticultural training with therapeutic gardening sessions that help students gain confidence, learn employability skills, and experience the wellbeing benefits of working with nature.
The Role
We’re looking for an experienced and motivated Lead Horticulture Trainer to take charge of our horticultural training and development programme.
In this role, you’ll design and deliver practical training sessions for adults with learning disabilities — from beginners through to Level 2 horticulture qualifications. You’ll also oversee a small team of three staff members, supporting them in their own projects and helping ensure the programme runs smoothly and effectively.
You’ll work closely with our on-site social enterprise, Share Nurseries, which grows and sells plants to the public. This provides students with real-world experience and a strong sense of achievement as they see their efforts contribute to the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, deliver, and assess horticulture training sessions for adults with a range of learning abilities.
- Develop and maintain engaging, inclusive learning materials to support students’ progress.
- Manage and mentor a small horticulture team, helping them grow in confidence and skill.
- Track student attendance and progress, prepare portfolios for verification, and ensure accurate record-keeping.
- Promote a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment for all participants.
- Collaborate with colleagues to strengthen links between training and our wider employability programmes.
About You
- You hold a Level 3 qualification (or higher) in Horticulture, or have equivalent practical experience.
- You have strong interpersonal skills and can build trust and rapport with people from diverse backgrounds.
- You’ve previously taught or trained adults — ideally those with learning disabilities — and have experience leading small teams.
- You’re patient, empathetic, and skilled at motivating people who may find learning challenging.
- You’re passionate about the therapeutic and social value of gardening and want to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
- A qualification in Horticultural Therapy would be a bonus, though genuine enthusiasm for the healing power of plants is essential.
